A young officer agrees to help him in a Court Martial, but there’s more going on than he first suspects, it stars Michael York, Richard Attenborough & Trevor Howard

17150 The Shadow Strikes B+/B £75 (4x400’) Super rare 1937 ‘B’ movie starring the wonderfully titled Rod La Roque who plays “The Shadow” a masked crime fighter who investigates men sent to break into an attorney’s safe, he assumes the attorney’s identity and starts investigating, it’s a nice souvenir of this type of entertainment

17963 Swing High, Swing Low B/B+ £90 (5x400’) Comedy drama, with a touch of music as well from 1937, it stars Carole Lombard, Fred MacMurray, Charles Butterworth and a young Dorothy Lamour. A stranded girl in Panama moves in with an ex soldier and his hypochondriac roommate, romance blossoms, but things never run smoothly in these films!

18443 The Gorilla B+/B £ SEE DESCRIPTION (4x400’) 1939 Comedy thriller starring ‘The Ritz Bros.’, a wealthy man is threatened by a killer known as ‘The Gorilla’, the boys turn up to investigate, just when a real Gorilla is on the loose. It’s a fun film but it has issues, this has come off a rough print, the grading is quite poor, either a bit dark, or a bit light, it is very rare though, so I’m leaving the price up to you, just make me an offer, it’s here to sell, I doubt if I’ll get my money back, but in this game sometimes you have to take a chance! 18509 Blossom Time B+ £80 (2x400’ & 2x600’)) Nice DCR print of this 1934 Biopic centring around the life of composer Franz Schubert who loves a woman from afar, when she marries  a dashing military officer he pours all his sorrows into his work, this stars Richard Tauber (Schubert) and Jane Baxter as his lost love. The film is filled with the wonderful Schubert music, in a way to get over royalty payments for a new score

18512 The Glass Mountain B+ £85 (5x400’) Nice DCR print of this 1949 film starring Dulcie Grey, Michael Denison & Valentina Cortese, it’s the story of an aspiring composer (Denison) who is shot down over Italy in WW2, he is rescued by a girl (Cortese) who tells him about a local legend, after the war he returns home to his loving wife (Grey), but he cannot get the story out of his head and he writes an Opera based upon it, but he longs to meet his rescuer one more time. It’s a fine drama with some stunning music to boot

18550 Station West B+/B £90 (4x400’) OB Nice Blackhawk import of this 1948 western, after 2 U.S. Calvary men get killed delivering a Gold shipment, a U.S. Army intelligence officer goes undercover in a nearby mining and logging town trying to find the killers, this stars Dick Powell, Jane Greer & Agnes Moorehead, rare in U.K.

 

Super 8mm F/L Features – B/W Silent (30% Discount Until 31/12/24)

16605 America (a.k.a. Love and Sacrifice) (runs at 18 f.p.s.) B+ £200 (6x400’) OB This is the 1924 D.W. Griffith silent classic, issued by Blackhawk Films in the U.S.A., this may be the only print here in the U,K,, which I was told was only run once from new. It runs for 2 hours 20 minutes (i.m.d.b. timing) and tells the epic story of a family caught up in the American Civil War, it stars Neil Hamilton, Carol Dempster & Erville Anderson. Here’s one for lovers of classic American silent features, it’s a very nice B/W print, considering the age of the movie, and I doubt you’ll ever see another print for sale here in the U.K.

18287 The Wizard of Oz B+ £120 (4x400’) OB Rare American import of this Niles Film release of this 1925 production of the L. Frank Baum classic, it was directed and starred Larry Semon, it starred Dorothy Dwan (as Dorothy), as with many Semon productions his good friend Oliver Hardy has a role as well, some of the special effects sequences still hold up well even today, unusual find!

17930 Charly B+ £90 (5x400’) OB Oscar winning performance by Cliff Robertson who plays a very simple soul, who undergoes an experiment that gives him the intelligence of a genius, but will it last? ABC Films release that retains pretty good colour overall, I had a print of this in the 1980’s, and the colour seems exactly the same now! It runs for about 80 minutes or so!

17852 Hannie Caulder B/B+ £65 (3x600’) This Walton print still has good colour, Raquel Welch, Robert Culp & Ernest Borgnine star in this 1971 revenge western adventure

15825 The Sword of Monte Cristo B+/B £55 (2x600’) Made in 1951 this is a swashbuckling tale set in France in 1858, George Montgomery is sent to find members of a group of rebels, led by Paula Corday who has found the Treasure of Monte Cristo

17142 The Fabulous Dorseys B+ £70 (4x400’) OB Made in 1947, and starring Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, who play themselves in this story of their rise to fame in music, each having their own Orchestra, but both play cracking 1940’s music, and this is the real star of the film, although the back story of the two brothers is played out well

17371 Casbah B/B+ £65 (4x400’) Made in 1948 this film stars Tony Martin & Yvonne De Carlo, it’s a story of a French Jewell thief in the Casbah in Algiers

18275 Radio Ranch B+/B £85 (4x400’) OB Gene Autry stars in this re-edited feature version of the 1935 serial “The Phantom Empire”, singing cowboy discovers an ancient race in caverns beneath his Radio Ranch, they have developed powerful new weapons, unscrupulous surface dwellers corrupt the peaceful race, can war be averted. Rare American Niles Films print, very rare here in the U.K.

18281 Blitz on Britain B+/B £85 (4x400’) OB Walton release of this WW2 documentary taken from British and German archives telling the defence of Britain from the Battle of Britain in the skies to the Blitz in 1941, well put together documentary

18215 Follow the Fleet B+ £75 (4x400’) Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers & of all people Randolph Scott star in this classic 1936 comedy musical, Sailor Fred tries to rekindle a romance with a girl he loves while on leave

18276 Victory at Sea B+ £75 (2x600’) WW2 documentary, with actual WW2 footage detailing the war at sea with the British and American and allied fleets

18335 Rio Grande B+/B £90 (5x400’) OB Classic John Ford directed Calvary adventure set in the Old West starring John Wayne & Maureen O’Hara, Calvary commander (Wayne) is posted to the Rio Grande border with Mexico where raiding Apaches and an enlisted son makes things very difficult, then the ex wife turns up!

18345 The Story of Verne and Irene Castle B+/B £75 (2x600’) Perhaps not the most remembered of the Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers movies, made in 1939, here they depict real life couple Verne & Irene Castle, who were a big Ballroom dance act from the early part of the 20th Century

18447 Evergreen B+/B £70 (4x400’) Fine early British musical (1934) starring Jessie Matthews as a famous Edwardian music hall star with a secret, who quietly retires to S. Africa to bring up her baby daughter, born out of wedlock, a big no-no for the era, years go by, her daughter now grown up comes to London as a showbiz hopefukl, but will her secret come out! It has comedy, music & romance, nice!

16796 Tension at Table Rock B+/B £60 (4x400’) OB Richard Egan, Dorothy Malone & Cameron Mitchell star in this 1956 western, Egan’s reluctant Gunslinger is using an alias to blend in when he helps out a Father and Son who are caught up in a robbery, he agrees to take the boy to his uncle in ‘Table Rock’

18500 The Enforcer (a.k.a. Murder Inc.) B+/B £65 (4x400’) Humphrey Bogart & Zero Mostel star in this tough crime thriller from 1951, a tough District Attorney (Bogart) gets the chance to prosecute the boss of crime organization Murder Inc.

18501 The Man in Grey B to B+/B £65 (5x400’) Historical drama starring James Mason, Margaret Lockwood & Phyllis Calvert, pretty Clarissa (Calvert) marries Lord Rohan (Mason) a brute of a man, he just wants heirs, he then has an affair with his wife’s friend Hester (Lockwood) who plans to eventually take her place

18502 The One That Got Away B+/B £70 (5x400’) Based on the true story of the only German prisoner of war to escape the British Isles during the war, Hardy Kruger plays a cocky German fighter Pilot who wants to carry on with the war starring Frank Randle & Diana Dors (who was about 22 when this was made), an accident prone Private (Randle) tries to rescue a female Corporal (Dors) from the attentions of a predatory Sergeant-Major, a nice example of a British comedian at the height of his powers, still very funny even today

18508 To Be Or Not To Be B+/B £70 (1x600’ & 2x400’) Comedic drama set in occupied Poland during WW2, an acting Troupe help a Polish soldier’s efforts to find a German spy. It stars Carole Lombard, Jack Benny & Robert Stack

15149 The Gondoliers B+/B £35 (3x400’) DCR release of this Gilbert & Sullivan Operetta (condensed version), colour is only fair (every print I’ve seen has been the same), and it may have a few splices here and there, but it’s rare

17467 25 Years (1952-77) B+/B £75 (3x400’) P/N: slight fade Made by EMI Films in 1977 for the silver jubilee, this is a rare documentary looking at the first 25 years of Queen Elizabeth II reign, with many rare moments featured from the many newsreels made over those years, we go around the world with the Queen and Prince Phillip, I’ve never seen this before, I wonder who released it on 8mm?

15393 Ruddigore B+ £45 (1x800’ & 1x400’) DCR Films release of this digest version of the Gilbert & Sullivan light Operetta, rare print now!

18481 Meteor B+ £80 (3x400’) OB This still retains good colour on this very well edited 1979 sci-fi story of a giant Meteor heading straight for Earth, the Americans & Russians are forced to work with each other to try and save the planet, it stars Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden & Martin Landau

18506 The Longest Yard (U.K. title “The Mean Machine”) B+ £95 (3x400’) OB Nice colour on this well edited Marketing Films release of this 1974 prison set drama with some bone crunching comedy as well. It stars Burt Reynolds plays am former pro American Football star whose put into prison, and then forced by the brutal Warden (Eddie Albert) to form a prison team of inmates  to take on his team made up of the guards, of course the usual fair play rules of U.S. Football are conveniently forgotten, as both sides pummel each other, it’s still a great watch (if a bit violent, at times!)

18581 The Flying Deuces B+ £85 (3x400’) Laurel & Hardy comedy from 1939, Ollie has fallen in love, but he’s rejected as she is happily married, instead of committing suicide he’s persuaded to join the French Foreign Legion to ‘forget’, unfortunately Stan comes as well! Nice Walton print too!

18597 All in Good Fun B+ £75 (3x400’) This is the rare F/L edition of this 1955 film where Bob Monkhouse shows us clips from the silent era, comedy, drama you name it featuring some of the biggest stars of that era like Charles Chaplin, Marie Dressler, The Keystone Cops and many more, this is only the 2nd time I’ve had the 3x400’

18600 Block-Heads B+/B £85 (2x600’) Brilliantly funny Laurel & Hardy comedy rom 1938, the boys are fighting together in WW1, Ollie is ordered over the top, while Stan has orders to stay on guard until relieved, 20 years later he is found, still guarding his trench. He’s taken back to America and Ollie finds out about him, this is where the fun starts, modern day gadgets, and of course Ollies wife! Great fun!

17332 Seven Keys to Baldpate B+ £60 (2x600’) Made in 1917, it was produced and starred (his acting debut) legendary composer George M. Cohan (Yankee Doodle Dandy), a writer (Cohan) bets his friend that he can write a 10,000 word novel in 24 hours, he uses his friends Baldpate Inn to write, supposedly closed for the Winter, so there should be no interruptions, until people with keys keep turning up, can he finish!

11555 The Private Life of the Cuckoo B+ £38 (600’) OB Made by the B.B.C. this shows the life of the Cuckoo, lovely nature film, the colour is fair, but it was taken off a 16mm print, and varies during the reel, as all prints I’ve seen do

16634 The Man and the Earth – The Virgin Forest of Venezuela B+ £30 (600’) OB Fine colour print of this nature documentary from the 1970’s

17836 Golden Rendezvous B+ £35 (600’) Based upon an Alistair MacLean story, this stars Richard Harris & Ann Turkel, it’s got ships, and attempts to steal Gold Bullion, PM Films released this digest, colour is slightly warm and slightly faded, but a rare print now!

17990 When the North Winds Blow Pt.s 1 & 2 B+ £45 (2x400’) Here’s the first 2 reels from the Walton 1974 outdoors nature adventure feature, still retains nice colour too!

18553 The Groove Tube B+/B £65 (1x600’) Nice colour on this Iver Films release of this 1974 film which is a series of skits taking the pi** out of 70’s American TV, but be aware there is some adult humour in this as well, but it’s a fun 30 minutes or so!

17082 The Amazing Exploits of the Clutching Hand – Chapter 1 B/B+ £40 (600’) Here’s a curiosity for you, this is the complete chapter one from this 15 part 1936 serial, it’s got a simple plot of fake Gold, a stolen notebook

17597 Cheek to Cheek B+ £35 (600’) This reel comprises songs and dances from the 1936 Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers classic 1936 musical comedy “Top Hat”, it runs well!

17979 Hollywood and the Stars – The Swashbucklers B+ £55 (600’) Joseph Cotton narrates this documentary looking at the many swashbucklers over the years from Douglas Fairbanks to Errol Flynn, full of clips, fun reel!

17984 Oh! Mr. Porter B+ £45 (2x400’) OB (Pt,2) I have here the 400’digest from Walton, and Part 2 from there 4x400’ feature of the Will Hay classic comedy, I believe the digest is cut from the last part of the film, so this may work quite well

18202 The Plow That Broke the Plains B+ £45 (2x400’) OB Made in 1936 this documentary tells the story of the Great Plains of America, when a combination of farming practices and environmental factors caused the great dust bowl of the 1930’s, this is a nice Blackhawk Films imported print which shows the hardships of the day

18256 Dark Waters B/B+ £50 (2x400’) Mystery drama from 1944 starring Merle Oberon & Franchot Tone, a woman returns to the U.S.A. after a German U-Boat sank her ship and finds out someone wants to kill her for her inheritance, rare print!

18286 Shall We Dance B+/B £55 (2x400’) OB Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers musical from 1937, the pair pose as a married couple, but actually fall in love along the way, fine music and great dance numbers

18370 Sing As We Flow B+ £50 (2x400’) Documentary made (I’m guessing!) in the late 1940’s or early 50’s, about waterways around the world, Venice, Cambridge, the Thames and Henley are featured plus much more, very unusual, no idea who released this (perhaps Perry’s Movies!), but it’s well made!

18392 Under the River B+ £55 (500’) OB Derann print of this British Transport Film made in 1959 which looks at the construction of the Severn tunnel  and a record of the unique Cornish beam engines which were used for over 70 years in keeping the tunnel dry until being replaced by Electric pumps

18448 Hollywood and the Stars – The Immortal Jolson B+/B £45 (600’) Narrated by Joseph Cotton this looks at the life and films of Al Jolson

18517 Footlight Parade B+ £55 (2x400’) OB Well edited Derann release of this 1933 musical comedy great starring James Cagney, Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler & Dick Powell, Cagney plays a music producer whose task is to come up with live music and comedy prologues being used by the new sound movie theatres, but a lot of his ideas are being copied, have they got a spy in the fold

Margaret Lockwood, James Mason & Patricia Roc, a bored Noblewoman (Lockwood) who also has debts dons a mask and men’s attire to become a Highwayman, this soon becomes addictive, what becomes of most addicts?

18521 42nd Street B+/B £55 (2x400’) Fine Busby Berkeley musical from Derann, here edited in correct order, it has some wonderful musical numbers, a bit of comedy, and stars like Warner Baxter, Bebe Daniels, Ruby Keeler & a young Ginger Rogers

18595 Hollywood and the Stars – The One and Only Bing B+ £55 (2x400’) Narrated by Joseph Cotton this 1963 documentary looks at Bing Crosby, the crooner and the Oscar winning actor with many clips from his films included, well made

18596 The Candlelight Murder B+ £55 (2x400’) This was one of a series with the ‘Scotland Yard’ prologue, made in 1953 it’s the story of a man found dead in a stream, his face badly bashed in, it turns out he was an old recluse, so who would want to murder him, early forensics re-create the dead mans face, will it help?

17815 Dollars and Sense B+ £45 (2x400’) Blackhawk print of this 1916 comedy starring Ora Carew & Joseph Belmont. A country girl and a foppish Englishman inherit an estate, but the will states it cannot be divided, and they would have to marry, if one refuses then the estate goes to the other, the girl schemes to  swindle the Englishman, can she do it!

18438 The Sawmill B+ £45 (2X400’ @500’ in total) OB Extremely rare F/L (about 25 minutes) Blackhawk Films import of this 1922 Mack Sennett comedy starring Larry Semon and Oliver Hardy, a bumbling sawmill worker (Semon) is after the hand of the owners daughter, while trying to avoid the bullying Foreman (Hardy), sight gags galore, Semon & Hardy are on fine form, nice to see an early Hardy film

17495 The Block Signal B+/B £45 (2x400’) Perry’s Movies print of this 1926 Railways story, the railways are changing from the moving arm signals to coloured lights (Red & Green), but no one thought to test the train drivers for being colour blind, which in this film ends in a fantastically shot head on train collision, which impacts on the lives of the passengers and railway workers, unusual and rare!

17614 The Fighting Eagle B+ £45 (2x400’) Made by Warner Bros./Pathe in 1927, it stars Rod la Rocque as a Brigadier in Napoleon’s Army who exposes a traitor, this is rare!

18025 Metropolis B+ £60 (2x400’) Rare edited version of Fritz Lang’s seminal 1927 Sci-Fi classic, includes a lot of the famous images and scenes

World War II: G.I. Diary

Below I list a number of these WW2 documentaries released in the late 1970’s by Techno Films, narrated by Lloyd Bridges, the novelty with these films is the actual WW2 footage is in colour, the super 8 prints all look about the same, colour is acceptable, I actually bought one of these titles myself new, and there is little different in the colour now as it was then, none of the footage used was re-mastered, so it does vary from title to title!

This is one of his better shorts of the time, many laughs!

18709 Sons of the Desert B+ £120 (1x600’ & 1x800’) Fine Blackhawk Films imported print of this classic 1933 Laurel & Hardy comedy, the boys want to go to the annual ‘Sons of the Desert’ lodge convention in Chicago, knowing the wives would say no, Ollie feigns an illness and gets a Doctor (who really is a Vet!) to say that he needs a sea Cruise to recover and Stan offers to help his pal and go with him, but by the time the boys return home, news has got out that the ship they were supposed to be on has sunk, the boys try to wheedle out of it by saying they were ship-hiked, that’s how they were not on board, all goes well until the wives go to the movies where on screen is a feature about a Lodge convention, and who’s on screen Stan & Ollie!

B+ £65 (4x400’) Now here’s a rarity, a F/L print of this 1939 British comedy starring Arthur Lucan (Dragged up as OMR) and his wife Kitty McShane (playing OMR’s Daughter), OMR loses her Laundry job and then battles her ex-boss in a parliamentary election, it’s great British humour of the time, but still raises a laugh 85 years later!

18712 Hollywood: The Selznick Years B+/B (I’m giving it this rating as a few printed in neg marks can be seen, it would have had a fair few copies from the negative, I’m guessing) £120 (2x600’) Made in 1969 this tells the story of iconic filmmaker David O. Selznick, we see many clips from his films and interviews with some of his stars (who were mostly still alive in 1969), for many years this was the only way to see clips from M.G.M.’s “Gone With the Wind”, but theirs plenty more on show here, as he was a prolific producer in his day, with many Blockbusters to his name, this is a really nice super 8 print from Derann, with colour and B/W excerpts

18630 The Chiltern Hundreds B+ £85 (4x400’) Extremely rare early Derann release of this 1949 comedy starring David Tomlinson, Cecil Parker ^ Gladys Boot, young Lord Pym (Tomlinson) gets leave from the Army saying that he’s running to become an M.P. while really wanting to marry his extremely rich American girlfriend before she goes home, but things go wrong (as they usually do!) and he’s forced to run as a candidate in the election, which he loses, can he get her back?

18703 We’re Wrestling Tonight B+ £25 OB Who remembers Saturday afternoons in the 1970’s to early 80’s, it’s 4 p.m. on the ‘World of Sport’ on ITV, on came the wrestling, my favourites were the tag matches, and guess what’s on this Walton reel as the ‘Wild man of Borneo’ (in his mask!) and Mike ‘Hardboiled’ Haggerty take on ‘Judo’ Al Hayes and ‘Rebel’ Ray Hunter, so who’s on for a nostalgia fix!

18621 Mickey Mouse Disco B+ £25 This film was put together in 1980 by the Disney company, who put various clips from Mickey Mouse cartoons to a Disco soundtrack, this was really a promo for a music album of the same name, but you know what, it kind’a works, this print still retains good colour too, what more could you want!

18632 Stormy Seas – Flip the Frog B+ £25 OB Made in 1932 this Ub Iwerks ‘Flip the Frog’ cartoon is very rare today, he’s out on his Boat playing some music when a dark cloud comes overhead and the weather turns nasty, quite charming in its way!

18715 News Parade of the Year 1942 B+ £25 OB This is a rare Castle Films American view of this WW2 year, the year where America firmly comes into the war, it’s an end of year round-up just like our newsreels of the time

18716 Apollo Moonshot ’68 B+/B £25 Ultra rare Walton release of this British Movietone short looking at the first time a manned space capsule went around the Moon in December 1968, many shots of the Astronauts and there massive Saturn 5 rocket, I’ve not come across another copy!

18717 The Music Lesson – Flip the Frog B+/B £25 OB Made in 1933 this Ub Iwerks cartoon has ‘Flip’ attending his Piano lesson where he makes quite a bit of trouble, animation is pretty good considering the age of the cartoon

18740 Derann Trailer Reel No.3 B+/B £25 OB These are 3 serial trailers – ‘Adventures of Captain Marvel’ – ‘ Federal Agents Vs. the Underworld’ & ‘King of the Texas Rangers’, I do like this type of trailer as it captures the time these were made perfectly!
